William W. McCarten is Chairman of DiamondRock Hospitality Company, a Lodging Real Estate Investment Trust that was founded by Mr. McCarten and several former Marriott International executives in 2004. DiamondRock (DRH) is listed on the NYSE and owns 23 high quality hotels with assets exceeding $2.5 billion. Mr. McCarten served as Chief Executive Officer of DiamondRock from its inception through September 1, 2008.
Mr. McCarten joined Marriott International, Inc. in 1979 and over the next twenty-five years held a number of executive positions with Marriott and related entities. He served as President of Marriott International's Services Group from 2001 to 2003 where he led its senior living and distribution businesses. Previous Marriott experience included a number of senior executive finance, development and operating roles, including Senior Vice President, Finance and Chief Accounting Officer.
From 1992 to 2000, Mr. McCarten served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of HMSHost Corporation, the leading developer and operator of restaurant and retail concessions in travel and entertainment venues. He led the transformation of this industry segment through the development of leading restaurant and retail brands in these venues. HMS Host Corporation was spun out of Host Marriott Corporation in late 1995 and was listed on the NYSE until its merger with Autogrill, SpA in 1999.
Prior to joining Marriott, Mr. McCarten began his career as a certified public accountant with Arthur Andersen & Co. in 1970. Mr. McCarten received his B.S. in Accounting from the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia in 1970, and he served on the Advisory Board of the McIntire School from 1981 to 1996. He also serves on the National Selection Committee of the Jefferson Scholars Foundation at the University of Virginia.
Mr. McCarten has received several prestigious industry awards including Nations Restaurant News' Golden Chain Award (1999), Nations Restaurant News' Operator of the Year Award (1999), and HVS' Lodging Leadership CEO of the Year Award (2007).
